400\">Before the \u201ctechnological seeds\u201d are planted in Nand Mulchandani\u2019s \u201cAI Victory Gardens,\u201d DoD employees and partners will want to understand and embed the basics of responsible AI rules and standards.\u00a0 ForHumanity can be part of the JAIC community that provides customized nose-to-tail coordination on behalf of the Department of Defense, a cohort of DoD contractors, and other interested parties.\u00a0 Should the JAIC choose to deploy Independent Audit of AI Systems as a uniform standard of responsible AI, it<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> will benefit from ForHumanity\u2019s partnership with the Autonomy Observatory, Workshop and Laboratory (OWL) at Johns Hopkins University\u2019s (JHU) Institute for Assured Autonomy (IAA). The IAA is a research institute jointly run by JHU\u2019s Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) and JHU\u2019s Whiting School of Engineering. This partnership will allow us to take advantage of APL\u2019s extensive DoD relationships to ensure that we have rapid cooperation from the services, the intelligence community and other defense contractors. We establish maturity models for sufficient, mature and insufficient documentation, training and expertise across 40+ areas of audit compliance from design to decommission.\u00a0 These knowledge stores are available to all ForHumanity Contributors and FHCAs and will track use cases and anonymous insufficiencies. (RAI Governance &#8211; IT1, AI Product and acquisition lifecycle &#8211; IT3 and RAI Requirement validation &#8211; IT4)<\/span><\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-52d378e6 elementor-widget elementor-widget-menu-anchor\" data-id=\"52d378e6\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"menu-anchor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t<div id=\"TerritorialScope\" class=\"elementor-menu-anchor\"><\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-69a7fa32 elementor-widget elementor-widget-heading\" data-id=\"69a7fa32\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"heading.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t<h5 class=\"elementor-heading-title elementor-size-default\">Explainability<\/h5>\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-4fed812a elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"4fed812a\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n\t\t\t\t<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Adopting a similar to DARPA\u2019s focus on Explainable AI (XAI), ForHumanity believes that explainability is a core tenet of governance, accountability and oversight.&nbsp; Some early governance models over similar or related AI systems recognized the importance of explainability and its significance when it comes to how institutions make decisions regarding the use of systems that can impact humans.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">While explainability may be difficult or impossible in certain instances of complex neural networks or deep reinforcement learning systems, explainability does not require exhaustingly granular recitations of precise decision pathways.&nbsp; Rather the adversely affected individual must be able to access a better understanding of the decision-making process.&nbsp; If an entity cannot provide such an explanation, that entity will struggle to earn the trust of the warfighter.
